What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of physical fitness developed (over a period of 43 years) by Joseph H. Pilates. The method consists of hundreds of exercises divided between 3 or more apparatuses. The main apparatuses include: The mat, the universal reformer and the Cadillac/ pole system. Though these apparatuses are tools to perform the Pilates method to varying degrees, they are not mandatory in receiving the many benefits of Pilates. A mat may be all you need. Pilates is often taught in a group class setting, duets (2 people) or in a private one on one session.
Through the practice of Pilates the body becomes “uniformly developed”. “Uniform development” generally means bringing balance to the entire body. Specifically it means to increase strength in weak muscles and increase flexibility in over developed muscles. Bringing the body into alignment is of the upmost importance in Pilates. We often focus on teaching our clients what it means and feels like to hold your body in proper alignment then teach them to move while they keep the alignment. The mind is often challenged as well. Maintaining focus during the sessions is stressed. Keep in mind that you are developing not only a strong core but new ways to move your body. New patterns of movement are introduced through the development of new neuro pathways in your system, this takes time and focus. The results are visible in 10 or less sessions and the challenge is often a lot of fun.
